Motivational Interviewing: Advanced Skills "Sustaining Change Through Intrinsic Motivation" Date: TBD or Delivered at your location ** Limited to Class Size of Up to 25 Participants Program Details ![]() With significant focus on practice, Advanced
Motivational Interviewing would ideally follow about a month after the
basic course. This allows some experience using the method which
reveals successes and challenges as well as the recognition that
despite its design the method is actually difficult to
master. Focus is more on the study of
techniques for their strategic purpose in evoking change talk,
commitment and implementation of behavior change. A heavy focus
is on understanding the need of the practitioner to shift from expert
advisor to expert in evocation. It involves more Practice
Breakouts with coaching from the instructor. Day 1 Discussion Use of MI by participants since basic skills training • What works • What are challenges/barriers Participants Desire for Advanced Training Review of Basic Skills Course • Spirit • Principles • Techniques • Phase I • Phase II • Four Categories of Change Talk • 10 Evocative Strategies Factors that Effect Change Deficit Based Approaches (Old Muscle) Strength Based Approaches in Correctional and Clinical Programs (New Muscle) • Interpersonal Styles • External Factors • Intrapersonal Motivation Classroom Exercise – To increase knowledge of “Evocation” as a strategy that is more productive in fostering intrapersonal motivation for change over “Advice, instruction, dosing with reality, bargaining”. • Volunteer with change issue they are willing to describe is chosen • Volunteer leaves the room • In the class-room the instructor facilitates a brainstorming exercise in which the participants list every piece of advice they can think of that would help the volunteer • Instructor writes them down on Flip-chart paper • The list is removed or turned over and the volunteer is invited back into the room • The instructor helps make a list of everything the volunteer knows that would be a way to resolve their change issue • The two lists are compared In this way all participants are able to see that people already know most, if not all of the advice a counselor could give. Counselors using MI work to evoke what the person knows instead of telling them. Evocation is a strength based strategy and people are more apt to use their strengths rather than someone else’s advice or instruction. Breakout Exercise • Groups of three • Each member selects a targeted change issue of their own that they are comfortable talking about • Each member takes a turn of about 5 minutes in the roles of speaker, counselor, and coder. • The counselors role is to o Find out what the targeted issue is •
The coder will use the OARS Coding Sheet to count the number of
techniques (O-A-R-S) and give feedback to the counselor after the
summary.o Find out what the person thinks will help resolve the issue o Provide a summary of the issue and the things the person thinks will help • After the exercise is complete the full group reconvenes and the instructor will facilitate a discussion in which participants will process their experiences for learning in the exercise. Strength-based, Stage-wise, assistive and collaborative relationships Dealing with the counselor versus dealing with the issue o Probation officer bad o Probation officer good o Discussion of reasons why counselors, probation officers, doctors, etc. use techniques that evoke resistance so quickly and automatically and find it hard to use evocative techniques that are strength based, stage-wise and assistive. Sharpening Techniques Open Ended Questions o Intention of open ended questions compared to intention of closed questions o Effect of closed ended questions on intrapersonal motivation o Effect of open ended questions on intrapersonal motivation o Responses to open ended o Responses to closed o Open ended questions as a person centered approach o Closed questions as a counselor centered approach Breakout exercise o Each table (3 to 5 people per group) will get a list of 25 closed questions o Each table to convert the list of 25 closed questions to open ended o The group will reconvene and the instructor will facilitate a process discussion in which each table will share their conversions with the entire class.
