Program Details

The key to successful MI implementation is supervisory feedback and coaching.  The aim is to train individuals who have already acquired MI skills on approaches for observing and coaching their staffs on the proper application of the method.

MIA:STEP is a method for training persons whose primary task is the completion of assessments, especially those assessments that occur at the initiation of a treatment episode, to use MI for joining and engaging individuals, receiving deeper and more accurate information and improving show rates and commitment to treatment after the assessment.

Additionally, it is a method for supervisors of persons who use MI in their practice to enhance their MI Skills through a simple scoring and feedback technique.  The course teaches effective coaching and supervisory skills to help team leaders, supervisors and managers apply effective feedback and coaching as they work with their staff.

Use of tools and resources for insuring fidelity to the method is taught.

Following the course, participants should be in a position to monitor client sessions, document and provide feedback on the session they have observed to insure adherence to fidelity of the MI method.

Participating graduates are encouraged to arrange periodic coaching and feedback sessions with the instructor, either individually or as a group to again insure fidelity to the method.
