The Advanced course takes the method from where participants indicate they are proficient and pushes it out further.  Using Power Point, Lecture, Video Examples, Modeling, and practice breakouts, the focus is more on the study of techniques for their strategic purpose in evoking change talk, commitment and implementation of behavior change.

    • Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency

      The MIA: STEP
course teaches effective coaching and supervisorsy skills to help team leaders, supervisors and managers apply effective feedback and coaching as they work with their staff.
The key to successful MI implementation is supervisory feedback and coaching.  The aim here is to train individuals who have already acquired MI skills on approaches for observing and coaching their staffs on the proper application of the method.

Also use of tools and resources for insuring fidelity to the method is taught
      .

      Coaching

Further coaching sessions in person or via conference are recommended to be held with the instructor in person or via a teleconference or webinar session following the course.  These may be held individually and in group settings.  Staff will schedule time with the instructor for a half hour session each month.  Supervisors are encouraged to schedule periodic team meetings with the instructor for the purpose of specific consultation on treatment approaches for casework conducted by the team.

These are group coaching sessions with the team that can occur monthly or less than monthly as decided by team supervisors or administrators.  (There is a nominal additional charge for the coaching sessions)

--  Please note -- Introduction to MI is required for admission to this course

    • MI Train The Trainer (MTT)

The content for the Trainer Training course is to help participants who have completed the basic and advanced courses to conduct MI training to others.  Prospective trainers are required to complete MI: Core Skills and MI: Advanced Skills courses.   Also, they must be individuals who are achieving high scores in fidelity scoring.  Prospective Trainers will ideally present themselves as comfortable and confident in a training presentation venue.  Experience as a trainer or educator would be extremely helpful.

Research on Motivational Interviewing demonstrates that initial mass trainings to learn the method does not create sustainable excellence in practice.  In fact the research on Motivational Interviewing demonstrates that ongoing feedback from audio coding, along with periodic refresher training and coaching is the most effective way to achieve and maintain high fidelity of practice.  The research shows that without these activities many practitioners and agencies say they are practicing Motivational Interviewing but when reviewed are at very low fidelity with matching outcomes.  As a result it is highly recommended that iagencies engage a trainer to provide periodic refreshers, coach and give feedback.

Alternately, agencies may consiter training in-house trainers on Motivational Interviewing to provide these periodic trainings and refreshers as well as coach and give feedback.
